By Matthew Robert Payne Its a hard process writing for this ezine and putting my words down on a page that might one day be published in a book, This week I did a four part series on what life on earth would look on earth, according to what Paul wrote to Timothy. As I wrote about the sins listed I explained them. If I found it easy, it is because they all existed in my life from time to time, and after I posted the whole series I fell into a depression, knowing that I am a preacher whose own life is a mess. Sometimes I look at the story about the young rich ruler that met Jesus and I look at myself. Jesus rattled off a number of commandments and this guy answered that he had kept all of them from his youth. Guys I have to admit something; I never kept all the commandments that the guy had kept. But this guy had. If you are honest with yourself you have not kept them, and youll have to admit most of you would not sell all you own to possess Jesus like he hinted in the pearl collector parable, and the parable of the hidden treasurer in the field. I am a big sinner. I have no assets and I am poor. I am one person that could really use someone having pity on me, and I know when I read Scripture it does not make me feel good. Most often it makes me feel bad. The Scriptures strip me clean and the Holy Spirit draws me to repent in tears and convicts me to change. I have an enemy that I have a hard time to forgive. I have unresolved sins. I have idols that I give time to and less of my heart then goes to Jesus. I have films that I love more then Jesus. I have things that I do that if Jesus told me to give up I would struggle to give up. I am so full of sin that its a miracle that Jesus forgives me and even inspired me to write. I am tough on my readers and this comes from being tough on myself. I am guilty of much of what I preach and so can illustrate it. I am telling you all to change, when I do the same thing and I am a hypocrite. I am like a Pharisee of Jesus’ time, and yet I am better because on paper I am admitting it and Jesus is helping me. Dont freak out with what I suggest and what I preach online then. Dont look at my life as an example. Look to the message and let the Word of God convict you and go on and change. Jesus said for people to do what the Pharisees taught, but not to do what they did. The same goes for me, dont be as bad as me, and take my advice as I am writing it for myself more then for you. They are usually dormant perennials, shrubs, or trees that have been harvested from the field, have had the soil washed from their roots and then have been stored in refrigeration for later shipment. “Bare rooting” a plant is a safe, proven, and much used means of storing and shipping many garden plants. At Cottage Farms we always recommend that you plant bare root plants as soon as possible, but you can hold them in a refrigerator, unheated garage, or cellar for a short period if necessary. The best time of year for planting bare root plants in the garden is during the winter (if the soil is not frozen) or spring. The arrival of warmer temperatures and longer days cause the plants to wake up naturally from their winter dormancy and help insure gardening success. ——————————————————————————– Daylilies: Cottage Farms suggests choosing a garden area that will receive at least four hours of direct sun each day. Spade or roto-till the intended flower bed to a depth of at least 8-10 inches. If you do not have good garden soil, you may want to blend in a generous portion of dehydrated manure, compost, peat moss, or shredded leaves, but daylilies are one of the easiest to grow and most forgiving plants in any garden. Dig holes at least twice as wide and deep as the bare root divisions. Fashion a small cone-shaped mound of dirt in the center of the hole below ground level. Spread the roots over the mound with no more than 1″ of soil covering the crown (where the leaves and roots meet). For daylilies with emerging green growth plant any new growth above ground level. Firm the soil around the crown of the plant. Cottage Farms always recommends mulching immediately since mulch shades and cools the soil, helps prevent weeds and provides organic matter for the soil. Water your plants thoroughly after mulching. Daylilies grow best with at least 1-inch of rain (or equivalent watering) each week, but are quite drought tolerant. As soon as new growth emerges begin fertilizing every two weeks with Cottage Farms “Carefree Bud-N-Bloom Booster” throughout the growing season. This will help ensure maximum flowering and root development. ——————————————————————————– Trees and Shrubs: First, look the plant over and remove (prune) any broken or damaged limbs or roots. Cottage Farms recommends soaking the roots of the tree or shrub in a bucket of water for 2 to 3 hours prior to planting. When ready for planting, select a site suitable for the plant and dig a hole larger than the roots are wide when they are spread out. If you are planting in poor or clay soils, you may want to mix compost, dehydrated manure, peat moss or shredded leaves with you excavated soil (if you do so, you may have extra soil when you complete the planting - remove excess soil, never pile it against the stem or plant too deep) . In the bottom of the hole form a cone shaped mound of soil. Place the plant’s roots over the mound of soil and spread them evenly around the mound. Before filling the hole with soil make sure the trees existing soil line will be even with the new ground level. Begin filling the hole with soil, carefully firming the soil around the roots, leaving no air pockets. When the hole is approximately full of soil fill the hole with water and let it soak in. Once the water has soaked in make sure the tree is standing straight and finish filling the hole with soil. Form a saucer shaped rim around the outside of the hole. This will allow water to stay within the planting area. To assist a tree or tall shrub in getting anchored, you may want to stake it. As always, Cottage Farms suggests a 2-4-inch layer of mulch around the planting area to promote moisture retention, maintain even soil temperatures, and to discourage weed growth. Water the new transplant generously once every week throughout its first growing season. In later years, at least 1-inch of rain or watering equivalent per week is recommended for most soils. As soon as new growth emerges begin fertilizing every two weeks with Cottage Farms “Carefree Bud-N-Bloom Booster” throughout the growing season. This will help ensure maximum flowering and root development. ——————————————————————————– Roses: Prior to planting remove (prune off) any broken roots or canes. Cottage Farms suggests soaking the entire rose plant (roots and canes) for at least 1-2 hours in luke-warm water. Select a location that receives at least four hours of sun each day. Spade or roto-till the intended rose bed to a depth of 12-15 inches. Unless you have good garden soil, Cottage Farms suggest you blend in a generous portion of dehydrated manure, compost, peat moss, or shredded leaves. This will help improve drainage and aeration. Dig a hole at least twice as wide and deep as the bare roots. Partially fill the hole with the soil mix, making a cone shaped mound in the center of the hole over which to drape the roots. Adjust the height of the mound so the graft union is at the correct level. In warmer climates a rose should be planted so the bud union (a bulge on the stem of the rose plant indicating where the rose plant has been grafted onto the roots) is at or slightly above ground level. In colder climates, the union may be planted up to 2″ below ground level to help reduce the chance for winter die-back. Spread the roots out evenly over the cone shaped mound. Holding the rose at the correct planting depth, fill the hole with soil, working it carefully around the roots. When the hole is approximately full of soil, fill the hole with water and let it soak in. Once the water has soaked into the soil, make sure the rose is standing straight up and finish filling the hole. Form a saucer shaped rim around the outside of the hole. This will allow water to stay within the planting area. Firm in the soil around the rhizome with your fingers and water thoroughly. Iris perform best with at least 1-inch of rain (or equivalent watering) each week. However, few of them give any thought to whether they are actually ready to begin such a program. You may be thinking that anyone who wants to lose weight must be ready to start a diet. The first step is to make a list of all the reasons for losing weight that matter to the person who will be losing the weight. Once a list has been made, the potential dieter needs to decide how important these reasons are. If they fall in the “would be nice” category they are probably not strong enough to provide any motivation for staying on a plan for very long. By Julie Williams Chooks (chickens) have been domesticated for many centuries. They originate from the Malaysian rainforests so they love to free-range. Chooks are such easy animals to care for, can make great pets for children and are a valuable resource for the organic gardener. Youll need to check with your local council to find out their regulations. Some councils wont allow you to keep any poultry, whereas others willsome even allow roosters. Some of the benefits of keeping chooks: - they supply you with beautiful, fresh eggs - daily - your left overs will never go in the bin again (reduces waste) - provide you with an excellent fertilizer base - they dig over the soil (so you don’t have to) - they reduce insect numbers; great for around your orchard - provide you with live entertainment Basic requirements * Dry, fox proof shelter * A safe place to lay eggs and hatch chicks (if you have a rooster) * A roosting perch off the ground (allow about 20cm per bird) * Layer pellets (or crumble for chicks) should make up the majority of their diet. * Kitchen scraps are great for variety * Wheat, corn or other grains should be offered occasionally, but not form the majority of their diet * Birds have no teeth; they swallow small pebbles or grit to grind down their food in their gizzard. I lock my chooks up from sunset to about midday. This way theyve almost always laid their eggs by then, so that I dont have to go on a daily egg hunt! Old grass-catchers from lawn movers make great laying boxes just the right size and they offer ventilation. Liquid Fertilizer Chook manure is a great base for a liquid fertilizer or to add to your compost heap. You never use it fresh though, as bird manure also contains their urine and will burn your crops. To make a liquid manure, place it in a porous bag in a bucket and fill the bucket with water. After about three weeks or so you can use the water on and around your plants, diluted to look like weak tea. Chook Manure for Compost If you provide a litter of straw, hay or sawdust in your chooks living quarters they will turn it into great compost material for you. They will scratch it, add manure and turn it over. You can add layers of this organic matter to your compost heap or leave it to turn into a fine, dark substance. One of the favorites of franchisee attorneys in class-action lawsuits used to sue the franchisor for misuse of the promotional funds, which the franchisees have contributed to. There are a number of huge cases with large settlements, some of which have nearly bankrupted the franchisee company. It is for this reason that I decided to upgrade the clauses in our franchisee agreement and the information on the promotional fund and its contributions in the confidential operations manual. Here below is a copy of the clauses that I inserted into my franchisee companys franchise agreements; 2.3 Promotional Fund 2.3.1 Franchisee Contributions Franchisee will pay to Franchisor each month as a contribution to a Car Wash Guys System promotional fund (the Promotional Fund), if and when established, one hundred dollars ($100) per calendar month. Promotional Fund contributions are due and payable in full at the same time and in the same manner as continuing royalty fees. Payments of Promotional Fund contributions are not refundable. 2.3.2 Use Franchisor will not commingle Promotional Fund contributions with its general funds, but will hold all Promotional Fund contributions from all its Franchisees in one or more designated accounts. The Promotional Fund may be used as determined by Franchisor: (a) to purchase national, regional, and local advertising in broadcast, print, internet and electronic media; (b) to be used exclusively to meet any and all costs of maintaining, administering, researching, directing and preparing advertising and/or promotional activities (including, among other things, the costs of preparing and conducting television, radio, magazine, newspaper and internet advertising campaigns); direct mail and outdoor billboard advertising; marketing surveys and public relations activities; use of advertising agencies and website developers to assist with projects, website development and maintenance and internet informational and advertising links and promotional brochures, CD-ROMs, video tapes and other marketing materials for the Franchisor. (c) to acquire the services of in-house and outside advertising, public relations professionals and website developers; (d) to carry on other advertising and promotional activities as Franchisor may reasonably deem advisable to increase demand for Services offered by its Franchisees, whether Core Services or Optional Services; and (e) to pay the reasonable expenses of administering the Promotional Fund, including the reasonable compensation of Franchisors employees and expenses of the advisory committee described in Section 2.3.3 (if established by Franchisor) while working on behalf of the Promotional Fund. 2.3.3 Administration The Promotional Fund will be administered by the Franchisor or by an advertising agency selected by the Franchisor. Franchisor, in its sole discretion, may establish a Franchisee advisory committee from time to time to provide input and suggestions regarding use of the Promotional Fund and the effectiveness of programs funded by the Promotional Fund. If the Franchisee advisory committee is appointed, it will consist of representatives of Franchisor and representatives of the Franchisees, with the representatives of Franchisees constituting a majority of the members thereof. Franchisor shall retain sole discretion over the use of the Promotional Fund. 2.3.4 Accounting Franchisor will account to Franchisee annually for all Promotional Fund contributions received and spent. Our vision of adulthood is seen through rose tinted glasses with freedom, money and the happy ever after in the forethought of our mind. When we are young we cant even comprehend how quickly life passes us by. Twenty five year olds are ancient, teachers have lived for ever and as for a grand parents we cant ever imagine being that old. As the years go by we soon realise that twelve months becomes shorter and shorter, no sooner does the summer start then its back to winter, Christmas and the cycle starts over again. Once you hit thirty those years just fly by, you get older quicker and quicker and you soon realise that life isnt everlasting. We are visitors on this planet for but a short period of time and if you keep on looking for that miracle way, way in the future you will miss the best part of your life. Realising how little time we have, puts a whole new perspective on life and makes you realise how precious life is. Now if you consider your relationship, do you really want to waste the best years of your life on failed relationships, one parent lifestyles and lonely nights? Always appreciate what you have got rather than setting your sites on a fairy tale. Marriage is a two way street, its all about give and take. Marriage is a changing target, like life, it is continually evolving and the ground rules keep changing but that doesnt mean that you cant learn to change with it. If you imagine the workplace the flexible workers, those who are prepared to learn and adapt to new processes and new ways of working are usually the ones who are successful. Marriage is the same. The most successful marriages are where partners learn to accept that times change, life doesnt stand still and if you want to get the best out of your relationship you need to adapt and move with the times.
